By providing an alternative to expensive emergency room visits by the uninsured, HFA saves Brazos Valley hospitals and taxpayers millions of dollars each year

Charity Name:  Habitat for Humanity
Charity Website:  habitatbcs.org

Seeking to put God's love into action, Habitat for Humanity brings people together to build homes, communities, and hope. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit, ecumenical organization that builds simple, decent, and affordable homes in partnership with families. Habitat offers a hand up, not a handout, to hardworking, low-income families in Bryan/College Station. Bryan College/Station Habitat for Humanity is a 501c3 organization that was incorporated in 1989. We have built 219 homes and transformed the lives of more than 1,000 community members - mostly children. Habitat families must demonstrate a real housing need, the ability to pay, and a willingness to partner through 500 hours of "sweat equity," assisting in the construction of their own home and the homes of others. Families who are accepted into our program are then eligible to purchase a home with a 20 to 30-year, 0% interest mortgage. In addition to partnering with low-income families, Habitat serves volunteers from all walks of life. Retirees, students, business leaders, church members, and others come to Habitat for an opportunity to serve. Volunteers work alongside community partners and homeowners to make an impact in the Bryan/College Station Community.

Why does this Charity Deserve to be Chosen?:  "There is an incredible need for Habitat for Humanity's affordable housing program among low-income residents in Bryan/College Station. More than 19% of families in Bryan and 16.7% of families in College Station live below the poverty level. B/CS Habitat estimates that more than 3,000 families are currently living in substandard housing conditions or are threatened by careless landlords. Eliminating barriers to homeownership means that low-income families can change their lives and the lives of their children for generations to come. Homeownership improves the domestic environment, improves children's test scores, and reduces behavioral health problems. Children living in Habitat homes have a designated space to do their school work and a safe place to play. Homeownership also breaks the cycle of poverty. Owning a home, especially for lower-income households, becomes an important means of wealth accumulation. B/CS Habitat has developed three subdivisions and has recently started its fourth subdivision called ""Faith"" in the East MLK area of Bryan. This new community will feature 24 new, energy-efficient homes for hardworking, low-income families in Bryan/College Station. Habitat plans to complete 250 homes by its 25th anniversary in December 2014. Through the generous support of the Caldwell Cares County grant, B/CS Habitat will continue to move forward with our mission, and many families will realize the dream of homeownership. With each wall that we raise and each house that we dedicate, the lives of children and their families are forever changed. Each of us who contributes our time, talent, and/or treasure to this ministry is enriched by the experience.

It is because of the many programs offered by The Salvation Army of Brazos County and the numerous families delivered from disaster by its efforts, that The Salvation Army deserves to receive the Caldwell Country Cares Grant.
